Create a cool and totally unexpected Pattern Print resist background using Distress Inks paired with a favorite Club Scrap stencil. The key to this technique lies in the special properties of the Taupe Pattern paper included in this month's Fun and Games collection.

Pattern Print Resist Tutorial

Several years ago I discovered the unique properties of this paper while helping to create a stencil for the It's a Plaid, Plaid World kit. I had some of these pattern papers in my stash and used a piece to test my stencil idea. To my surprise, the Distress Inks I was playing with resisted the print in the paper. Ever since then, I have wanted to share the idea.

Pattern Print Resist - Distress Inks

Cover a Taupe pattern panel with a stencil with large open areas. I chose to work with the Big Deal (02/2014) stencil. Apply Gathered Twigs, Fired Brick, Spiced Marmalade and Mustard Seed Distress inks over the stencil with Ink Applicator Brushes.

Darker colors create a beautifully vibrant resist.

Remove the stencil, spritz the inky side lightly with water.

Place the stencil face down onto a fresh clean panel.

Cover the stencil with a paper towel and apply pressure with a brayer or the palm of your hand.

I love a good two-for-one inky technique, don't you!?

Create a card with the panels - it's that simple! I paired the Big Deal stencil images with the Fun and Games stamped sentiments and sparkly sequins.

Don't forget to stamp the inside of the card!

I couldn't "resist" trying the same technique with the Let It Bee stencil.

Pattern Print Resist - CS® Hybrid Inks

The same ink and stencil "resist" technique works well with CS® Hybrid inks, too! Check out this card I created with the Zest For Life stencil and Club Scrap's Tangerine and Leaf Hybrid Inks

Pro tip: Make sure your hybrid ink pad has plenty of ink. A dried-out pad may not produce the desired results, which is why I have a CS® Hybrid Re-inker on hand for each of my ink pads!

I hope you will explore the cool properties of this paper. It's definitely ir-resist-able!
